Janice Chen is an accomplished legal professional who has dedicated her legal career to public service. As a Court Attorney with over twenty years in Kings County Supreme Court, Civil Term, she has worked in numerous specialized court parts to ensure access to justice for all court users. In the Central Compliance Part, she played a critical role in pre-trial preparation of cases, where she assisted attorneys in resolving discovery issues and drafted proposed orders for Court review. From January 2004 through December 2016 and August 2023 through the present, she has been assigned to the Guardianship Part, where she works with various stakeholders to protect the rights of incapacitated individuals who have a Court Appointed Guardian and are unable to care for their personal needs and/or manage their financial affairs under Article 81 of the Mental Hygiene Law. In this role, Ms. Chen utilizes a multidisciplinary approach and assists individuals, attorneys, and government agencies in resolving legal issues arising in a guardianship proceeding including estate planning, landlord/tenant issues, Medicaid and government benefits. In 2014, she was recognized as “Employee of the Year” by the NYS Unified Court System for her accomplishments and received the prestigious Nathan Sobel Award for dedication to the courts by the Brooklyn Bar Association.  

A daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, she is a member of the Asian-Jade society which encourages cultural understanding for Asian Pacific lawyers in the Court system, and in 2024, Ms. Chen was honored by the Equal Justice Committee of the 2nd Judicial for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the courts. She is committed to helping others through community service and since 2011 has served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Imagine Me Leadership Charter School in East New York and Brownsville, Brooklyn.  Ms. Chen has helped to advance the mission of educating the next generation of African-American boys. She presently serves as Chairperson of the Board. She is a member of Brooklyn Bar Association, Columbian Lawyers, Queens County Bar Association, and the Queens and Brooklyn Women’s Bar Associations.  Ms. Chen received her in B.A., in Criminal Justice, Rutgers University (1997)  J.D., Brooklyn Law School (2002) and is an alumni of Brooklyn Technical High School.
